Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Apple’s growing manufacturing operations in India and expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s shift of iPhone production outside the United States. Speaking during an address in Qatar, Trump revealed details of a recent conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said. “I told him, ‘Tim, you’re my friend. I treated you very good. You’re coming in with $500 billion, but now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.’”
Trump’s remarks were aimed at Apple’s increased investment in Indian manufacturing as the company moves to diversify its supply chain beyond China. In the past year alone, Apple produced iPhones worth nearly $22 billion in India, marking a 60% increase from the previous year. Currently, about 20% of Apple’s global iPhone output is manufactured in India, with more than 40 million units assembled in the past year.
Trump stated that while it’s acceptable for Apple to manufacture phones in India for the Indian market, devices meant for American consumers should be made within the U.S. “India can take care of themselves,” he added, referencing the country’s high tariffs and strong domestic economic growth.
Despite Trump’s comments, Apple executives have assured Indian government officials that their investment and expansion plans in India remain on track and will not be reversed.
Analysts believe that bringing large-scale iPhone manufacturing to the U.S. would be extremely difficult and expensive, due to Apple’s reliance on a deeply entrenched supply chain in Asia, particularly for parts and skilled labor.
Trump’s remarks highlight the broader political pressure U.S. tech giants face to bring manufacturing jobs back home, especially in the lead-up to the 2024 elections where economic nationalism continues to be a strong theme in his campaign.

ट्रंप ने कहा कि उन्होंने Apple के CEO टिम कुक से इस बारे में बात की है। ट्रंप बोले, “मैंने टिम से कहा, ‘तुम मेरे दोस्त हो, मैंने तुम्हारी कंपनी की बहुत मदद की। लेकिन अब सुन रहा हूँ कि तुम भारत में बहुत फैक्ट्री बना रहे हो। मैं नहीं चाहता कि तुम भारत में बनाओ।’”
Apple इस समय भारत में बहुत तेजी से iPhone बना रही है। पिछले एक साल में उन्होंने भारत में करीब 22 अरब डॉलर के iPhone बनाए हैं। यानी हर 5 में से 1 iPhone अब भारत में बनता है।
ट्रंप ने कहा कि अगर Apple भारत के लिए iPhone बना रही है तो ठीक है, लेकिन जो फोन अमेरिका में बिकने हैं, उन्हें अमेरिका में ही बनाना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा, “भारत अपनी जरूरतों का खुद ध्यान रख सकता है।”
हालांकि, Apple ने भारतीय सरकार को भरोसा दिया है कि वो भारत में निवेश करना और प्रोडक्शन बढ़ाना जारी रखेगी।
विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि Apple के लिए अमेरिका में फैक्ट्री लगाना और iPhone बनाना बहुत मुश्किल और महंगा होगा, क्योंकि इसके लिए बहुत सारे पार्ट्स और स्पेशल वर्कर्स की जरूरत होती है, जो अभी एशिया में मिलते हैं।
ट्रंप का यह बयान बताता है कि अमेरिका में चुनाव के समय विदेशी कंपनियों पर दबाव बढ़ता है कि वे अमेरिका में ही सामान बनाएं ताकि देश में नौकरियां बढ़ें।
