Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has registered a landslide victory in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections. In this election, while Mamata’s party got almost three-quarters of the votes, the Left Front parties have more votes than the BJP. The BJP’s vote share in this election has declined by 20% compared to the last Assembly elections. The emerging BJP has won only three seats. The Left Front and the Congress have won 2-2 seats and 3 independents. The good news for the Left Front parties is that their vote share has increased by 7%. In terms of vote share, the Trinamool Congress as well as the Left Front have performed well. Gone In the last election, the Trinamool Congress had won 124 seats while the Left Front parties had won 13, the BJP five and the Congress two. This time the Trinamool Congress got 71.95 per cent votes, the Left Front got 11.13 per cent and the BJP got 8.94 per cent votes. In the KMC elections, It has captured 22% more votes than the Assembly elections held in March-April this year. In addition, the BJP has received 6% less votes than in the KMC elections held in 2015 and 20% less than in the Assembly elections held this year. The vote share of the Left Front parties is lower than in the 2015 KMC elections, but it is 7% higher than this year’s Assembly elections. The Left Front may have won 3 seats but its candidates came second in 65 wards. 48 BJP candidates and 16 Congress candidates came second. The biggest winner in this election is Faiz Ahmed Khan of Trinamool Congress who won in Ward 66 with more than 62,000 votes.
